What is the difference between the two clauses?

Independent (Main) Clause

Independent clause is a clause that presents a complete thought, sentence, and consists of a subject and a predicate.

Examples:

  • They play football every day.
  • The people in the room were delighted at the news.
  • We will lose this match if Mike doesn't appear!

Dependent (Subordinate) Clause

Dependent/subordinate clause is a clause that does not present a complete thought or complete sentence, but consists of a subject and a predicate.

Examples:

  • They play.
  • The people in the room.
  • We will lose.
